Iron tablets in India: Orofer XT, Feronia XT and Livogen compared

These are treatment products, not general energy supplements. Compare elemental iron, salt, folic acid, side effects, interactions and why blood tests must guide the choice.

THE QUICK READ

Confirm iron deficiency before comparing brands

Heavy perimenopausal bleeding can cause iron deficiency, but fatigue, hair fall, breathlessness and brain fog are not specific. A full blood count and ferritin, interpreted with symptoms and inflammation, help establish the problem. Iron overload is harmful, and taking tablets without investigating ongoing blood loss can delay diagnosis of fibroids, gastrointestinal bleeding or another condition.

Stri.life received no payment, products or editorial approval from any brand named here. Formulas, prices and availability can change, so verify the current Indian pack. Customer reviews are anecdotal and can be incomplete or manipulated; they are used only to identify recurring usability themes, not to prove benefit.

Orofer XT and Feronia XT

Orofer XT and Feronia XT are ferrous-ascorbate combinations commonly labelled to provide 100 mg elemental iron with folic acid, typically 1.5 mg. They are close in active ingredients, so the meaningful differences are manufacturer, excipients, pack size, price and individual tolerance. Feronia's official information warns about antibiotic interactions and advises evaluating B12 or folate deficiency when expected response does not occur.

Reviews commonly report improved energy after several weeks when deficiency was present, but nausea, constipation, dark stools and metallic taste recur across brands. Dark stool can be expected; tarry stool with illness, severe pain or bleeding needs urgent medical assessment.

Livogen and Livogen XT are not the same

Classic Livogen uses ferrous fumarate and folic acid and has been described as providing 50 mg elemental iron per tablet. Livogen XT is a different, higher-dose combination that may include 100 mg elemental iron, folic acid and zinc. The shared name can cause accidental substitution. Always read the full suffix and elemental-iron line rather than asking only for Livogen.

Ferrous fumarate is effective and inexpensive but can be difficult for some stomachs. Ferrous ascorbate is often marketed as better tolerated, yet side effects remain possible and head-to-head evidence does not make one brand universally gentler.

Timing and interactions

Tea, coffee, calcium and antacids can reduce iron absorption. Iron also interferes with levothyroxine and some antibiotics, so spacing matters. Taking it on an empty stomach may improve absorption but worsen nausea; a clinician may adjust timing, dose or alternate-day schedule. Do not double a dose after vomiting or a missed tablet without advice.

Keep iron away from children; overdose can be fatal. Persistent intolerance, poor response, severe anaemia or continued heavy bleeding may require a different oral formulation, intravenous iron or treatment of the bleeding source.

The right comparison endpoint

The useful outcome is not which tablet has the highest dose. It is haemoglobin recovery, ferritin replenishment, tolerability, adherence and correction of the cause. Agree on a retest date and duration with the prescriber. Stop only when the treatment plan says to, because haemoglobin may improve before iron stores are restored.

QUICK ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Can I take iron for tiredness?

Only after assessment shows deficiency or a clinician recommends it.

Why do iron tablets cause constipation?

Unabsorbed iron can affect the gut; dose, form and schedule may be adjusted.

Is black stool normal?

It can occur, but tarry stool with pain, weakness or bleeding needs urgent review.

Can I take iron with calcium?

They can interfere, so separate them as advised by a pharmacist or clinician.

How long is treatment?

It depends on severity, response and cause; follow-up blood tests guide duration.
